THE CITY OF VALLEJO
The City of Vallejo is located in Solano County and has a population of approximately 125,000 residents in approximately 49 square miles. THE CITY ATTORNEY’S OFFICE
The City Attorney’s Office for the City of Vallejo provides its services through a staff of fourteen including, the appointed City Attorney, a Chief Assistant City Attorney, four Assistant City Attorneys, three Deputy City Attorneys, a Law Office Supervisor, three Paralegals and an Executive Secretary. The stated mission for the department is to provide timely, efficient and high-quality legal services, advice and support to the City Council and the City Administration. It also advances, supports and defends the interests of the City and its missions and goals while remaining dedicated to the principles of professionalism, ethical behavior and accountability.
THE POSITION
Under general direction from the City Attorney and Chief Assistant City Attorney, the Assistant City Attorney exercises professional judgment in formulating legal advice with a primary focus on employment law and also performs a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility. Key responsibilities include performing legal research and providing legal opinions and advice regarding various employee and labor relations as well as employment laws impacting the City; representing the City in labor disputes and handling personnel matters such as employment claims and complaints, appeals from disciplinary action, disability retirement proceedings and grievance arbitrations; representing the City before administrative boards, agencies and hearing officers; advising City officials, Commissions and Boards on a variety of legal issues; and appearing in court and administrative proceedings to represent the City's interest, as required.
The ideal candidate will have at least five years of concentrated experience in public sector labor and employment law matters, including administrative hearings, arbitrations, progressive discipline, investigations, MMBA, PERB, and FMLA and similar leave policies; experience with public sector labor relations, including negotiations and grievance administration; and exceptional communication, a measured and unflappable style, and highly refined analytical and interpersonal skills.
QUALIFICATIONS
The following are the minimum qualifications for the position of Assistant City Attorney:
Education: Possession of a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law.
Experience: A minimum of five years of responsible professional legal experience including experience in labor and employment law.
Licensure: California State Bar Membership.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
The annual salary range for the Assistant City Attorney is $165,270 to $200,887. Placement within the range is negotiable and dependent upon qualifications (DOQ).
In addition, the City offers a comprehensive benefits package including CalPERS retirement with a 2.7% at 55 formula for Classic Employees, with an employee contribution of 8%+1% employer share = 9%. For employees covered under PEPRA, the retirement formula is 2% at 62, with an employee contribution of 7.75%.
