The City of San Marcos, Texas offers a tremendous career opportunity for seasoned public sector finance professionals to serve a key leadership role for a fast-growing City in one of the most desirable areas of Texas. 


The position oversees the full breadth of public sector finance functions for a City with a robust slate of municipal services, including all utilities. The next Director of Finance will have the opportunity to experience tremendous professional growth alongside the City’s growth.


The Finance Department for the City of San Marcos is responsible for the full breadth of financial functions for the City, to include accounting, budget, payroll, utility billing, purchasing, treasury, and grants. The Finance Department is staffed with 38 employees and has a $4.3 million departmental budget. Reporting to the Director of Finance are an Assistant Director, Utility Billing Manager and a Purchasing Manager.


The most qualified candidate will possess a bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Public Administration, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred. In addition, ten (10) years of progressively responsible professional experience in finance, accounting, or a related field, with five (5) years of experience managing financial operations in a local government setting is required. Designation as a CPA, CGFO, or other relevant certification is desired.


The anticipated starting salary is up to $175,000 depending on qualifications. The City of San Marcos offers an excellent benefits package, including Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS) with an employee contribution of 7% of salary and a 2:1 matching contribution by the City, excellent insurance plans for employees and their dependent family members (health, dental, life, long-term disability, and voluntary vision coverage), and relocation assistance will be negotiated with the selected candidate.
