THE CITY OF VALLEJO

The City of Vallejo is located in Solano County and has a population of approximately 125,000 residents in approximately 49 square miles. Vallejo is a rapidly changing, highly diverse community located midway between the cities of Sacramento and San Francisco. THE CITY ATTORNEY’S OFFICE

The City Attorney’s Office for the City of Vallejo provides its services through a staff of fourteen including the appointed City Attorney, a Chief Assistant City Attorney, four Assistant City Attorneys, three Deputy City Attorneys, a Law Office Supervisor, three Paralegals and an Executive Secretary.  The stated mission for the department is to provide timely, efficient and high-quality legal services, advice and support to the City Council and the City Administration. It also advances, supports and defends the interests of the City and its missions and goals while remaining dedicated to the principles of professionalism, ethical behavior, and accountability.


THE POSITION

Under general direction from the City Attorney and Chief Assistant City Attorney, the Assistant City Attorney primarily handles litigation defense on behalf of the City. They will step into an active caseload, providing litigation services to various City departments, divisions and officials, including but not limited to the Police Department, Public Works, Human Resources and others, defending a variety of tort, wrongful termination, civil rights, anti-SLAPP, inverse condemnation and other matters in both State and Federal Court. Additionally, the candidate will provide advisory services to various City departments, divisions and officials and other work as assigned by the City Attorney. Responsibilities may include representing the City in State and Federal Court, handling cases from inception to conclusion, Pitchess motions, motions to quash, injunctions, writs and appeals, and other litigated matters.


The ideal candidate will have at least seven years of litigation experience with some experience litigating on behalf of or against public agencies. Experience working for a public agency is a plus; experience gained working in firms that support public agency clients is also valuable. Candidates must be comfortable handling litigation matters for the City of Vallejo from inception to conclusion, including any appeals. The most qualified candidates will have experience with the Government Claims Act and federal civil rights litigation.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The following are the minimum qualifications for the position of Assistant City Attorney I and Assistant City Attorney II. Placement in the appropriate classification will be based upon the selected candidate's qualifications and experience:


Assistant City Attorney I

  • Education: Possession of a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law.

  • Experience: Three years of responsible professional legal experience including experience in municipal law.

  • Licensure: California State Bar Membership.


Assistant City Attorney II

  • Education: Possession of a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law.

  • Experience: Five years of experience in positions of increasing responsibility working in a municipal law setting for a city attorney's office, county counsel, or comparable employer.

  • Licensure: California State Bar Membership.


COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The annual salary range for the Assistant City Attorney I is $149,188 – $181,340 and Assistant City Attorney II is $164,447 - $199,887. Placement within the classification and salary range is negotiable and dependent upon qualifications.


In addition, the City offers a comprehensive benefits package including CalPERS retirement with a 2.7% at 55 formula for Classic Employees, with an employee contribution of 8% + 1% employer share = 9%. For employees covered under PEPRA, the retirement formula is 2% at 62, with an employee contribution of 7.75%.
