Reporting to the City Attorney, the First Assistant City Attorney leads and supervises Deputy and Assistant City Attorneys and staff to optimize effective delivery of services in the legal department. The Legal Department provides its service through 20 employees (including 12 attorneys) and a FY 21/22 department budget of $3.3 million. Reporting to the First Assistant City Attorney are 10 Assistant and Deputy City Attorneys and a Lead Prosecutor. Reporting to the City Attorney are the First Assistant City Attorney and an Administration Manager.


Any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job is qualifying. A typical way to qualify includes obtaining a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school, seven or more years of progressively responsible experience in municipal law, either in a city legal department or in a private law firm, and licensure to practice law in the State of Texas, or the ability to obtain Texas licensure within six months of employment.


The salary range for the First Assistant City Attorney is up to $170,732, with placement in the range dependent on qualifications. The City of Denton offers an excellent executive benefit package, including retirement provided through TMRS. Employees contribute 7% of salary, with a city match of 2 to 1 upon retirement. Employees vest with 5 years of service and are eligible to retire with 20 years of service at any age, or with 5 years of service at age 60.
