As Metropolitan addresses a changing Colorado River, the future of State Water Project supplies, major investments in regional water resilience, and an ambitious capital program, the next Assistant General Manager will help shape how Southern California provides reliable water to 19 million people for decades to come. The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is a state-established cooperative that, with its 26 member agencies, provides water to approximately 19 million people across six counties and a 5,200-square-mile service area. Metropolitan imports water from the Colorado River and Northern California while investing in conservation, recycling, storage, groundwater recovery, water transfers, and other resource-management strategies. Metropolitan operates an extensive regional water system that includes the 242-mile Colorado River Aqueduct, nine reservoirs, approximately 830 miles of large-scale pipelines, five water treatment plants, and 15 hydroelectric facilities. Through its participation in the State Water Project, Metropolitan receives slightly less than half of the project’s contracted supplies delivered through the 444-mile California Aqueduct.
